OUR STORY

Nyangani Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd (NRE) is a Zimbabwean Independent Power Producer (IPP). Created in 2007, it has raised equity and loan capital to build, own and operate 44.3MW of hydroelectric and solar generation projects to deliver electricity into the national grids of Zimbabwe and Malawi.

In Zimbabwe, NRE has built 8 run of river hydroelectric power schemes on the rivers flowing off the Nyangani massif with an installed capacity of 33MW. In Mutoko, NRE has built a 2.5MW grid scale solar scheme which was the first such scheme to connect into the ZETDC grid.

In Malawi, NRE has constructed an 8.2MW hydroelectric power scheme on a river flowing off Mt Mulanje. This electricity is supplied into the Malawi national grid.

In 2023 NRE became a participating member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). NRE now regularly trades on the SAPP market which were created to enhance cross border trading of electricity across the region. In 2024, NRE sold 13% of its Zimbabwe generation on SAPP’s day ahead market. All other Zimbabwe generation was sold to ZETDC.

The company was formed to improve access to electricity to the resident population of the Honde Valley, an area that was poorly served by the national grid with limited connections and very regular power cuts. Over the last 15 years, the Honde Valley has benefitted from consistent reliable green electricity. This has driven new demand and greatly enhanced the potential of the valley. The Honde Valley is also a net exporter of electricity to Manicaland where it regularly keeps the lights on in Mutare.
