Community Empowerment

The Honde Valley Hydro Electric Power Trust (HVHEPT)

HVHEPT receives a share of the income of the generation plants in Zimbabwe.  The Trustees approve grants every year to projects that benefit the community in and around the districts where the power stations are located.

Over the last 9 years, the trustees have made grants to improve the access to electricity through extensions to the national grid and by connecting every Honde valley school to reliable grid power.

In addition to the work of the HVHEPT, NRE has built new roads to improve access to its sites. These roads have opened up new agricultural areas to local farmers and improved their access to market.

Honde Valley Schools Electrification

53 Schools have been connected to the National Grid and electrically reticulated (including the ZETDC connection and meter). Sufficient transformer capacity at the schools has been installed to allow local residents to connect into the grid at only the “last mile cost”. This programme will begin to include schools in the Mutoko and the Nyanga areas as projects are developed in these locations.

Proposals for grants can be made to the trustees of HVHEPT.  All grants made are for the development of community assets only and no individual persons are sole beneficiaries.
